Sowing & Planting
- Timing: Sow seeds in early spring, 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost, or in late summer for a fall crop.
- Depth & Spacing: Plant seeds about 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep.
- Row Spacing: Plant seeds in rows 18-24 inches apart.
- Succession Planting: Sow seeds every 2-3 weeks to ensure a continuous supply of lettuce.
- Thinning: Once seedlings are 1-2 inches tall, thin them to stand 6-12 inches apart to allow for proper growth.
Growing Conditions
-
Sunlight:
Plant in a location with full sun, but provide afternoon shade in hot climates to prevent plants from going to seed (bolting).
-
Soil:
Use loose, well-draining soil rich in organic matter.
-
Temperature:
Lettuce thrives in cool weather, with temperatures between 60°F and 65°F being ideal.
-
Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water deeply once a week or more frequently during dry periods.
Care & Harvesting
- Weeding: Avoid disturbing the shallow roots of lettuce plants when weeding.
- Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch, such as compost or straw, to help retain soil moisture.
- Harvesting: Harvest leaves as needed, preferably in the morning when they are crisp and sweet. Harvest full heads by cutting them at the base.
